Ingredients

(Makes 4–6 lángos)

  • 500 grams (about 4 cups) all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (7g) active dry yeast
  • 250 ml (1 cup) warm water
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2–3 tbsp vegetable oil (for the dough)
  • Extra oil for frying

Optional toppings:

  • Minced garlic with oil or butter
  • Sour cream
  • Grated cheese
  • Chopped fresh herbs

Instructions

1. Prepare the Dough

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt.
  3. Pour the yeast mixture and oil into the flour. Knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Cover the dough and let it rise for 1–1.5 hours, until it doubles in size.

2. Shape the Lángos

  1. Punch down the dough and divide it into equal portions (about 100–120 grams each).
  2. Roll each piece into a ball, then gently stretch it into a flat, round disc about 6–8 inches in diameter.

3. Fry the Flatbread

  1. Heat a skillet or deep pan with enough oil for shallow frying.
  2. Fry each lángos for 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown and puffed.
  3. Remove and drain on paper towels.

4. Add Toppings

  1. While still warm, rub with garlic or brush lightly with garlic-infused oil.
  2. Add sour cream, cheese, or your favorite toppings. Serve immediately.

Tips for Perfect Lángos

  • Oil temperature matters: Too hot burns the bread, too cold makes it greasy. Aim for medium heat.
  • Don’t overwork the dough: Gentle stretching keeps it airy inside.
  • Customize: Lángos can be savory or sweet. Try powdered sugar, jam, or cinnamon for a dessert version.

Conclusion

This Savory Hungarian Lángos recipe brings the vibrant flavors of Budapest street food straight to your kitchen. Crispy, airy, and golden, it’s perfect for gatherings, snacks, or anytime you crave something indulgent yet simple. With just a few pantry staples and a little love, you can enjoy this traditional Hungarian favorite without leaving home.
